Popular DJ duo NERVO just released a new song today, but the video clip has been made with a difference: to encourage girls to get into engineering.
The clip for the new song, titled 'People Grinnin' shows a whole bunch of female engineers creating android versions of the NERVO twins, and aims to draw attention to how much engineering is required in everyday life.
The DJs studied sound engineering themselves, and partnered with eight Australian universities to make the video clip happen.
"We loved the chance to show the world that there is engineering in every aspect of our lives," Miriam and Olivia Nervo, the DJs behind the song, said in a statement for the University of New South Wales (UNSW), one of the engineering faculties behind the collaboration.
"We're sound engineers, but our whole show is only made possible through expert engineering. From the makeup we wear, to the lights and the stage we perform on. Engineering makes it all possible, including the music that we make," the Nervo sisters added.
The project is part of 'Made by Me', a collaboration between eight leading Australian universities and Engineers Australia, to try and address the gender disparity and skills shortage in the engineering field.
We already know that females in STEM can face an uphill battle, from copping online abuse to women missing out on the top jobs. But these kinds of programs might help, by showing young girls role models in the field they want to go into.
"When we did engineering, we were the only girls in the class. So when we were approached to get behind this project it just made sense," said the duo.
But things are slowly getting better. Just last month Dartmouth College announced there were more women graduating its engineering program then men - and they believe this is the first time this has happened in the US.
And having awesome engineers of both genders is going to be increasingly important as society relies more on science and technology.
"Engineering is a very future-looking discipline that is integral to medicine, technology, communication, food production – everything around us that we value and rely on," said Alex Bannigan, the Woman in Engineering Manager at UNSW.
"Ultimately, don't let gender make the decision for you, we have so many options to do whatever we want now," said the NERVO sisters.
